We’ll call this the libertarian approach. This view allows us to imbibe secular dating-game platitudes like the currently popular sage wisdom called flirtexting. The second is to think that because the Bible does not speak about dating, it forbids dating entirely, and constrains us to pattern our practices after the cultural options available to the biblical authors. Understand the importance of the decision you are making regarding marriage, and establish commitments about your relationships prior to entering a courtship.

Until you are ready for marriage, ask God to lead you in developing friendships with Godly men and women, but do not try to win the affections of those friends. We each set up our own guidelines and boundaries as we navigate through these systems, but doing so can admittedly seem as liberating as it is confusing. However, there was once a period in history when stringent, societal rules and protocol in dating ruled the day. Yes, my friends, I am referring to the Victorian Era. Just fill in the blank.

We are forced to do that, anyway. Dating has no titles to give, and it certainly desires no clear definition to help guide us along the way.

While dating can be more casual in nature, courtship has a decidedly more serious goal in mind: marriage. So unless your goal is to ultimately make a commitment to marry, courtship is not for you. Not all couples who court get married.

I’d never “date” a guy I didn’t know. I’d have to know enough about him ahead of time to know if he’s a quality guy or not. I’d also not be so much about “dates” as just “doing” things together. I’d want to be able to do some ministry together – hang out with friends, and do fun things. If there was ever a point where I didn’t think the relationship was worth continuing to pursue, then I’d let them know. No sense in putting time into a lost cause. With my girls who are now 15 and 17 , we’re really encouraging them to wait a bit until they start dating and they’ve taken it to heart so far and to concentrate on their schooling and growing in the Lord.

If the answer is ever “no”, then it’s time to get out of the relationship. I thank God that my girls respect our feelings on this and are willing to listen to our counsel.

I don’t envy them right now either. This is a tough time to date, IMO.

When I was in the eighth grade, I remember it very well; we were assigned to do a written report and in addition to our written report we had to also give a speech in front of our class about a certain topic. My topic had to do with the a few of the different calendars that were in existence in the world. I learned then, that this was a difficult subject for me to understand. However, the teacher liked my report and had me give it at a special meeting of teachers; but it was just an elementary level report, but I had never thought about it before.

I knew then that it was a lot more complicated than I could understand. And it still is. Later, I learned, thanks to Christian Identity, that biblical ancient Israel had a very different calendar than we have now. Their new year had been, for over years, in the springtime. This explained some previously difficult scriptures that had to do with different calendars. For example, the day began in the Bible at the setting of the sun and not at one second after Midnight.
